Dreams Money Can Buy
When we were younger, each summer we had something to look forward to other than just school vacation: basketball camp. But as is the case with all good things, there was an age when we became too old to attend and had to start working there. Tankfully, we have something to look forward to once again.
As previewed in Dime #65, the inaugural Dwyane Wade Fantasy Camp this August was everything you thought it would be and more. In addition to the limo rides, cocktail receptions and Jordan Brand ap- parel – all while living it up at the picturesque Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach, Fla. – the campers were surprised when Will Smith and Governor Rick Scott both unexpectedly dropped by the camp.
Camp participants began their four-day, three-night stay with an hour-long session with Wade and his former college coach, Tom Crean, learning the fundamentals of the game, simple plays, and of course, the pick and roll. Everyone in attendance was there because they loved basketball. And through the intimate setting, they were able to personally hear about Wade's growth as a basketball player and as a person, as well as have the opportunity to play alongside him on the court.
"It was a cool experience on both sides, because I had a chance
to spend time with people who really love the game and have not given it up – despite their age," says Wade. "For them, taking time out of their busy schedules to spend a few days in Miami and just play basketball was a dream come true. I really enjoyed seeing their enthusiasm, camaraderie, teamwork, and growth."
Wade would be the first to tell you that he wouldn't be where he is today without the coaches he's had in his life. So in addition to Crean, campers were taught the game by Buzz Williams, Jim Larranaga, Mike Jarvis, Jay Williams, Tim Legler, Chris Mullin, and legendary trainer Tim Grover. Learning the game from them may have been worth the price of admission in its own right.
"I had a great experience at my first Fantasy Camp, and based on feedback, the men who participated had a great time as well," says Wade. "We're already in planning stages for next year's event, and looking forward to make their experience greater every year."
