been the 1990 national champion UNLV Runnin' Rebels, as well as the '90 Loyola Marymount Lions. But when Retro College Cuts first started out, the choices were limited because they only had access to certain manage- ment companies, who in turn only owned the licensing rights to certain teams. But once the business grew and management companies began opening their doors, the number of shorts grew and the word got out. With nearly 1,200 people following their Twitter account, @RetroCollegeCut, in only six months, Dave and his partners now know that the retro shorts market does exist. And now that they have a rela- tionship with the largest licensing group, Retro College Cuts is looking to expand the retro shorts brand rapidly and immediately. "We've got 10 verbal commitments, and we're aiming to get about 10 or 15 more," says Dave. "We'll probably have 40 schools that will be all in on the shorts side of the business by October of this year. So we've got 17 now, so 23 more. We'll probably add a few more around the March Madness timeframe, and by October of 2013, we'll have a full compliment of 80 schools, or 80 varieties." But the expansion won't stop there. "With programs that have had a great history and a great tradition of basketball excellence, you can do multiple years," Dave continues. "And you can also make the home shorts, and let that ride for six months, and then come out with the away shorst for that year. We just think there's a lot of depth in the category." For $69.99, less than half of what Dave used to pay on eBay, the shorts can be yours. But besides the money, the real pleasure of the business stems from the overwhelmingly positive response Retro College Cuts has received from customers and college bas- ketball fans. "We get an e-mail a week from someone who's passionate about it like we are, say- ing like 'I can't believe you guys decided to do this. I can't believe you picked this team.' When you get that type of response, that's what makes it fun." As a gift to Dime readers, the RetroCollegeCuts guys are offering a 15% discount to anyone who makes a purchase on the site until the end of July.
