BUSINESS HOOP ART Warren Shaw Bob Metelus Images WORDS. PHOTOS. Art Basel All NBA champions receive similar celebrations. Tey get parades, rings and ceremonies during the rst home game of the following season. But last seasons NBA champion Miami Heat had an entire art collection dedicated to them. Heat waves in Florida are normally some miserable stretch of unbearable sun that could melt the oil off the nest of paintings. Luckily, the Heat Wave that ran in Miami from December 5-9 was instead the title of a tribute to the NBAs defending champions during Miamis world-famous Art Basel exhibition. Art Basel, the worlds premier art show for modern and contemporary works, is a ve-day extravaganza showcasing art from more than 260 galleries and over 2,000 artists from across the globe. For the third straight year, the NBA and Art Basel came together through the Art of Basketball exhibition, a tting title for an exhibition afliated with one of the most artistic sports known to man. After getting involved in the event in 2011, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were back again. With this years Art of Basketball theme centered on Miamis recent championship, they both hosted an elegant reception to tip-off the festival, 22 while also receiving support at the event from teammates James Jones, Shane Battier and LeBron James. But for once, Bosh and Wade werent the stars of the show. There was little talk about their season. Instead, the focus shifted to the talents of curator/artist Billi Kid, and the team of artists that made up the Art of Basketball. If youre an artist, you have to be at Art Basel, and it was a natural t to link up with the Heat, says Kid.
